A former pastor and the Christian group he belonged to broke Alberta's human rights law by writing an anti-gay letter published in a Red Deer newspaper, a panel ruled Friday.
In 2002, Stephen Boissoin wrote a letter to the editor of the Red Deer Advocate that compared gay people to pedophiles and drug dealers. It was published under the headline "Homosexual agenda wicked."

Darren Lund, a high school teacher in Red Deer at the time, complained to the Alberta Human Rights Commission that the letter was a hate crime after a gay teenager was attacked in the city.
On Friday, a commission panel decided Boissoin and the Concerned Christian Coalition of which he was executive director violated human rights law because the letter likely exposed gays to hatred and contempt.
"I find that there is a circumstantial connection between the hate speech of Mr. Boissoin and the CCC and the beating of a gay teenager in Red Deer less than two weeks following the publication of Mr. Boissoin's letter," wrote panel chairwoman Lori Andreachuk.
Lund, now a professor who teaches social justice in Calgary, was pleased with Friday's ruling after a five-year fight.
"I think the ruling was very strong on that, that you can't just hide behind saying something is my opinion or my belief and that somehow allows hate speech," he said.
"So I think that's essentially what the ruling enforces is that in this case there are some reasonable lines that need to be drawn and some responsibilities that come along with free speech."

Lund said he does not regret raising the complaint despite receiving hate mail and death threats.
Jim Blake, the current head of the Christian group, said all Canadians should be allowed to speak freely.
"Clearly, the freedom of expression has been suppressed so we're disappointed," Blake said.
Penalty to be determined
The panel has yet to decide on a punishment for Boissoin or the coalition, but Lund said if a fine is imposed, he'd like to see the money go to the Alberta Teachers Association's diversity, equity and rights committee.
During the human rights hearing in July, Boissoin testified that the coalition's CEO at the time, Craig Chandler, was aware of the letter and supported him.
Chandler won the Alberta Conservative party nomination in Calgary-Egmont earlier this month.
The Tory executive is reviewing his candidacy on Saturday because of concerns about comments he made on his radio show against homosexuality and same-sex marriage.
You will of course immediately notice that the person cited, charged and convicted was FORMER PASTOR and this was a LETTER published in a newspaper which lead to a teenager being attacked and beaten following the publication.
The bigoted comments lead to the attacks, the comparing of pedophiles, drug dealers, etc., never seems to stop and the comments were made by an INDIVIDUAL, FORMER PASTOR, NOT DURING A SERMON but on his own time and nothing to do with religious observance or inside of a church druing religious business.
this was immediately seen by the poster as violations of the bigots religious freedoms and the facts explaining the events were completely ignored and seen by the fundie poster as if the person who wrote the letter was now victimized for inciting the violent beating the teenager suffered as direct result of the letter!
All the godsquadders see is pastor conviction and nothin else. They disregard the rest of the story as if it were written as pastor convicted for practicing his religion!!
The Matthew Sheppard Hate Crime legislation must be passed immediately and enforced with a rath of biblical proportion against these godsquadders. Only then will the sermons change to admonishing hte attendees to believe the pastor and NOT take to the streets to attack others who don't follow their ridiculous ideology of hatred and self victimization.
Once the godsquaddersare made to see the reality of the secular law enforced and that their beliefs do not give them the right to enforce their ideology on others will be the wake up call to them to change this all out effort to convert America and the world.
The godsquadders seem to think their bible has always been in print and that no other philosophy, religion or standard exist prior to or afterward for people to follow. they carry on as if they alone decide what is right and wrong and no one can say otherwise and no amount of factual data or proof is sufficient to change their thinking.

Religious opinion aside, what happened to this Pastor is an attrocity. Your facts are not correct. Hate or defend his opinion...whichever that is irrelevant. The letter in question did not "lead" to any provable assault. The Alberta Human Rights Commission made that assumption without one piece of evidence....literally. They accepted the opinion of the complainant who used the statement that an unidentifed boy made to a reporter who asked what he thought of the Pastors comments...obviously after providing them for him to read. This boy claimed he was beaten for being gay and did not directly link Boissoin's comments to the assault. In addition, the police NEVER received a complaint about this assault and the victim nor witnesses appeared at the hearing. Linking a letter to an editor to an alleged assualt is one of the reasons that this ruling is now moving the a real court of law where I would be surprised if the ruling isn't overturned very quickly. It is obvious that this commission overstepped their legal boundaries. I would advise studying your topics a little better.
Looks like I hit the nail on the head! If you have facts then post them and stop hiding tell us who you are unless of course this is just hogwash to confuse the issue.
If you had anything to begin with then you would have put it up since you didn't pretty much tells everyone your lying.

Facts..I just posted them. Read the complaint and the transcript from the hearing at the Alberta Human Righs and Citizenship Commission. What one feels about Boissoin or his opinions is secondary. The fact is, there is no legal basis to convict him. His letter is his opinion. It is a just a letter to the editor. It is ridiculous that he was convicted. My understanding is that he has appealed to a real court and his case will be heard in Sept of this year. He did not advocate violence and in every public appearence or article, on his website etc he has never done so. He was against the propagation of homosexuality in school...specifically how a teacher in his community was inviting gay minsters to the public school where he worked to teach teens the homosexual view of the Bible without inviting the opposing opinion. Also the Human Rights Commission themselves, the very commission that convicted Boissoin fund homosexual initiatives. How could Boissoin have had a fair trial??????? Like I said, this is not about his opinion. What the Commission did is illegal and a real court will hear this case for the sake of all Canadians. The Human Righs Commission is social engineering and they can't do it at the expense of freedom of thought and speech.
Your claims state read the report, well where is it? You are the one making the assertions and yet you provide nothing only saying it is an atrocity, but only whining it was unfair and giving nothing to link to what you only say exists. You have to post the links, post the reports, show where his conduct was not in violation of the law and you haven't done that.
Think about this, if you claim that you own a special object and no one sees it then you haven't shown anyone that it exists. The case is similar, if you want me to read something then post it and put up the links so it can be verified and not just made up by you.
I posted the News article, so saying my facts are wrong is absurd, I gave verifiable links to check my post, you only complain and give nothing, secondly you need to identify yourself if you intend for this to stay up and stop hiding. A CP ID will be OK for now, but in order to be taken seriously by me you need to identify who you are.
Next if you fail to respond to this response then your conduct will prove you lack any proof and just want to whine and complain fro a righteous bust of this bigot and his crew for violating the laws of Canada.
If you can post an real ID and as I said a CP ID is fine for NOW, next post your proof and give the links to where you got it. Sources from secular sources not religious biased sources, so we can see it isn't some whining bigots who want to simply force their ideology on everyone and especially against the LGBT community. In fact post an email for follow ups.
Finally while it may appear you have posted something substantial, it really doesn't amount to more than you calling the facts wrong and voicing your emotional, ideological beliefs against a valid law in Canada. So are you Canadian?
Please respond and give the actual sources or as I have stated you aren't complying with what was asked and then failing to follow the very simple rules, force me to conclude based upon what you have given and that is nothing beyond baseless claims and nothing to back it up. Post your SECULAR PROOF or join the rest of those who can't.

You are the one operating a blog. Me...I am just responding for the heck of it. You should care about researching the facts BEFORE the first post. I'm sure you will have some sort of defensive response as it is typical of people like you. Doesn't matter in the end as it is my opinion and many others that Boissoin will be vindicated. Again, his opinion is a whole different matter. His freedom of thought and expression though, I will do whatever I can to ensure that he and every other Canadian has them.
You are the one making the claims that other facts exist and yet, after being asked several times for the facts you claim exist you fail to post them or even give a link to where these alleged facts can be found.
Next you base your entire premise on speculation that somehow in the future this bigot and his ilk will be vindicated since you personally feel that people like this bigot can call for people to act on their words calling for eradication of the LGBT community and then make assertions they weren't the cause of it.
When the bigots publish letters and call for people to be judged by their ideology then they can't say they didn't intend the results to take place otherwise why would they be publishing it in the first place.
No you don't get to make claims and then get a free ride when you don't out up the facts to back your claims up. You don't get to turn your eyes and cover your ears when the reality of the situation demands that you not only see, but hear the screams of people hurt due to the words, actions an deeds by a bigot. You are simply trying to cover up the abuse and the solicitations for violence and no religion can do that. No belief can hide it's involvement in the encouraging, inciting to and solicitation of violence in furtherance of it's goals and agenda.
You have to prove that your position is supportable and since you continue to claim the facts of the newspaper's story is wrong you have to disprove the news story, which you haven't done. You have been asked repeatedly for the proof you rely upon and give nothing, You whine about the injustice of what happened and give nothing to show it was injustice.
